August, starry nights: there's nothing like sleeping out in the open. Yesterday afternoon, four of us left the station to build a sort of individual igloos to sleep in. The snow being particularly compact and had to work with, the result looks more like open graves, but they shelter from the chilling breeze.
In the evening, for the second time this month, temperatures dropped below -50°C: not enough to dampen our spirits! The recipe: a Karimat, an inflatable mattress and a sheep skin for the floor; then clothes: thermals, fleeces, down overalls, two pairs of socks and down slippers; then the wrapping: a fleece bag, a sleeping bag rated at -30 and on top of that, a gore-tex bag to envelop everything, down to the Karimat.
The difficult bit is to go out of the bag in the morning by -45°C... Hereafter, a picture of me going “to bed.”
